Discovery Islands Lodge kayak daytrips are a great opportunity to learn the basics of sea kayaking while exploring the natural beauty of Outer Vancouver Island!
Our sea kayaking tours begin at the Discovery Islands Lodge near the end of Surge Narrows Road on northern Quadra Island-- a spectacular 30 minute drive from Heriot Bay. After an introduction to the kayaks and instruction in basic techniques, we'll begin a leisurely 6-hour sea kayaking tour through the calm channels between the islands of Quadra, Maurelle and Read.

Paddling towards the towering mountains beyond the Rendezvous Islands, our sea kayaking tours meander along forested shores past the remote island homesteads around the Read Island community of Surge Narrows.

We'll take breaks to explore points of interest, enjoy a little beachcombing, and savour the ambience of the area.
We'll explore the small islets and tidal backeddies of Surge Narrows Marine Park, and midday we will pause in a delightful location for a delicious & wholesome lunch. In the shallow waters of the passes you'll have great opportunities to view the diversity of colourful marine life for which the area is famous.

Given the abundance of wildlife, you're sure to see many shore and sea birds, and likely to spy mink, otter and seals. If we're lucky, it's possible that dolphins or a pod of whales might share our route

Most of our guides live here around Quadra Island and will enhance your Outer Islands sea kayaking experience with colourful stories about island life... All of our kayak guides are certified, experienced, and thoroughly familiar with the area. You can expect to learn a lot and also feel safe, secure and well-looked-after!

-- Kayak Daytrips start at 9:30 AM, ending about 4:30 PM

--All Quadra Island kayak tours will begin with instruction and practice of paddling techniques and safety procedures.

--You be required to sign a liability waiver.

--Minors must be accompanied by an adult.

How to Get to Discovery Islands Lodge
Getting here is part of the fun! You'll enjoy a beautiful drive through Quadra Island's Main Lakes Provincial Park, a classic temperate rainforest. Drive north from Heriot Bay, following the signs to Surge Narrows.

This winding road will take you 22 kilometers into Quadra Island's wilderness, ending near Discovery Islands Lodge. At the end of the road you will find our sign directing you to a parking area, and then a walking track (100 meters) down to the Lodge and our kayaking dock.
Please be extremely careful driving the Surge Narrows Road! It is a wonderfully scenic drive, but the road is narrow, often single lane, and there are many corners with poor visibility.

The road is well-maintained and fine for 2-wheel vehicles. Just drive slowly and watch for on-coming traffic!
